Reelabilities Film Festival

I just wanted to share the link for the NY Reelabilites Film Festival which will be going on from February 9th through 14th at locations all across the city (including NYU). It’s the largest festival in the country dedicated to “promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities.” (http://newyork.reelabilities.org/)

Also, and perhaps more importantly to us, these films will provide perfect platforms for thinking about intersectionality in dynamic ways. Using disability as both a lens and frame, topics including gender, sexuality, religion and race will be discussed and represented in a diverse selection of films from the US, Mozambique, China, France, Israel, Iran and Finland.

For an example, check out this trailer for Defining Beauty: Ms. Wheelchair America, which explores how disability may complicate or highlight the already complicated ideologies surrounding beauty and femininity in the US. It will be showing at NYU’s Michelson Theater (621 Broadway) on Friday, Feb 10th and is free for all students. Hope to see some of you there!
