Hip-hop history

So we watched Byron Hurt’s “Hip-hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” today. Several of you were interested more in hip-hop studies and the history of the industry as well as the culture.

One of the best histories of the culture (although there are many good books) is _Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation_ by Jeff Chang. It isn’t as strong on gender analysis as it could be, but it is good on overall historical context. The site for the book is here: http://cantstopwontstop.com/

And the best (as far as I can tell) history of the industry may be Dan Charnas’ _The Big Payback: the History of the Business of Hip-Hop_

here is an NPR piece with excerpt from the book and an interview with Charnas : http://www.npr.org/2010/12/09/131932127/a-history-of-the-big-business-of-hip-hop
